Martin Spencker Assumes Responsibility for the International Activities of Thieme

As of July 1, 2019 Martin Spencker (54) will be the Executive Vice President International Business of the Thieme Group. He will then be responsible for all the market offerings of Thieme outside the German-speaking countries. Moreover, the various international Thieme locations will be run by country managers in future. These changes are associated with the forthcoming retirement of Brian D. Scanlan, the current President of Thieme Publishers, New York.

The Thieme Group operates on a global scale as a supplier of information and services for target groups in the fields of medicine, chemistry and science. With subsidiaries in New York, Delhi, Rio and Beijing, as well as with digital offerings and Open Access publications, the Thieme Group has continuously expanded its international presence in the last few decades.

Brian D. Scanlan, President of Thieme Publishers since 1995, will retire at the end of 2019. This prompted the Thieme management to restructure its international activities: As a result, Martin Spencker in his function as Executive Vice President International Business will from now on coordinate all the international market offerings of the Thieme Group at their headquarters. The individual locations themselves will be run by Managing Directors: From July 1 onwards, Dr. Cathrin Weinstein will take over this task for Thieme USA, and Louisa Turrell will do so for Thieme Brazil. Ajit Kohli will continue to perform this function for Thieme India, as will Dr. Daniel Schiff for Thieme China. Within the management of Thieme the international activities are assigned to Dr. Udo Schiller, who is responsible for products & solutions worldwide.

Martin Spencker has been working for Thieme since 1993: At first he was responsible for the marketing activities of Thieme’s subsidiary Enke, then he became head of the division responsible for the educational products of the Georg Thieme publishing house. His particular focus in the last few years has been on the opportunities of digital publishing, and he was heavily involved in the establishment of learning platforms such as Via Medici and CNE (Certified Nursing Education). Spencker gained international experience with MacMillan Professional Books and Oxford University Press in New York and also in connection with the international marketing of Thieme’s Anatomy Atlas PROMETHEUS. “In view of his international background, but mainly due to his experience with digital business models and the transformation of processes, offers and services into digital services, Martin Spencker is the best qualified person for this new task” stated Dr. h.c. Albrecht Hauff, Chief Executive Officer of the Thieme Group, as the reason for the decision.

Brian D. Scanlan will continue working for Thieme until the end of the year. In the last few years, he made a substantial contribution to the further expansion of the international activities of the Thieme Group. During this time new markets have been opened up, digital platforms such as MedOne have been launched, and the journal program has been expanded with Open Access. Now Spencker is going to continue to advance the digital expansion as his main objective. In doing so he plans to bring the network of global players, processes, systems and offerings within the Group closer together. Spencker emphasizes: “I can rely on an outstanding team worldwide, with which we can make use of the special opportunities on the international markets for Thieme”.

Thieme Chemistry deposits nearly 700,000 distinct chemical structures into PubChem

Known for providing high-quality chemical information in the field of organic synthesis, Thieme Chemistry has provided approximately 700,000 distinct structures to PubChem—the open chemistry database at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). In addition to the structural information, the upload includes more than 1,200,000 distinct links from chemicals to the Thieme Chemistry journals and online product portfolio, enlarging the number of chemical structures in PubChem with links to the scientific literature.

PubChem is an open database of chemical molecules at the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) and is used by several million users worldwide. It collects information on chemical structures, identifiers, biological activities, chemical and physical properties as well as patents, health, safety and toxicity data. Since the launch in 2004, PubChem has become a key chemical information resource for scientists, students, and the general public. Now thousands of structures and links to Thieme’s chemistry journals SYNTHESIS, SYNLETT, SYNFACTS, as well as to the online reference works Science of Synthesis and Pharmaceutical Substances have been uploaded to the PubChem portal. Of the 700,000 Thieme Chemistry chemical structures deposited to PubChem, 89 percent did not have literature links prior to this contribution. In addition, 42 percent of the 700,000 chemical structures are new to PubChem.

“We recognize the importance of linking our publications and making our quality content more accessible to scientific researchers worldwide. We want to ensure that the published scientific work of our authors and editors is read and cited as much as possible. This collaboration with PubChem will make our structures and articles more visible as well as provide valuable information to the chemical community” says Dr. Fiona Shortt de Hernandez, Director Digital Services and Strategic Partnerships, Thieme Chemistry.

Thieme’s contribution, which was facilitated by InfoChem, a longstanding collaboration partner with Thieme Chemistry, improves the discoverability of information about chemicals: “We are proud and very pleased that all the chemical information created during over twenty years collaboration with Thieme now find its way into the world’s largest free chemical database. This deposition of approximately 700,000 Thieme compounds makes them even more discoverable to the scientific community”, says Dr. Josef Eiblmaier, Managing Director at InfoChem.

With its scientific publications, Thieme Chemistry, a part of the Thieme Group, provides chemists in research, science and industry with highly evaluated specialist information on synthetic, organic and general chemistry. All products of Thieme are available in electronic format and predominantly in English language. Full access to current awareness articles from SYNFACTS, primary literature journal articles from SYNTHESIS and SYNLETT, full-text synthetic methodology reviews in Science of Synthesis and encyclopedic information from Pharmaceutical Substances is subject to journal subscription or licensing.

Thieme and Schattauer launch new open access journal TH Open

Thieme has joined forces with Schattauer Publishers to launch a new open access journal: TH Open. It will provide updates on the latest developments in vascular medicine, complementing Schattauer's established subscription title Thrombosis and Haemostasis. The new open access journal will follow the PWYW (pay what you want) pricing strategy, which leaves the decision of how much the publication of an article in the new English-language journal is worth up to the author. TH Open will be officially introduced at the ISTH 2017 Congress, the global meeting in thrombosis, hemostasis and vascular biology to be held in Berlin on July 8 - 13, 2017.

Vascular medicine research continuously develops new diagnostic tools and treatments for vascular diseases ranging from arteriosclerosis and thrombosis to strokes. "TH Open is a significant new opportunity for the rapid dissemination of knowledge in this crucial field, satisfying the growing demand for up-to-date articles and results," says Daniel Schiff, MD, Senior Vice President, Thieme Publishers. The open access journal will complement Schattauer's established journal Thrombosis and Haemostasis, which celebrates its 60-year anniversary in 2017.

Interested authors are welcome to submit original articles and clinical studies as well as review articles and case studies for online publication in TH Open. Submissions will be reviewed by internationally recognized experts, and authors will also benefit from the quality-driven editing and high visibility due to Thieme’s highly experienced and driven marketing teams.

All relevant submission and publication information for TH Open is available on Thieme Open at The online platform provides a complete overview of the multiple open access publication options offered by the Thieme Group. Authors can currently choose between 28 open access journals. All articles published in open access journals are freely available to readers via the Thieme Online Books & Journals Platform.

The first open access journal with PWYW pricing strategy, The Surgery Journal, was launched by Thieme in the summer of 2015. TH Open follows the same principle: once an article passes the peer review process, the author can decide which publication fee he or she is willing to pay. "The issue of value, and its perception in the Open Access world, is a very interesting question that we are continuing to study with TH Open, in collaboration with the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität of Munich’s School of Management and Department of Economics," Daniel Schiff shares.

Thieme Stresses Importance of Publishers’ Role in Defending the Independence of Science

Thieme Publishing Group, one of the major providers of medical and health publications, media and services, strongly advocates the freedom of scientific inquiry and publication. The publisher also underlines this commitment by contributing to the current campaign launched by the German Publishers’ and Booksellers’ Association (Börsenverein des Deutschen Buchhandels). In an editorial published in various English-language Thieme journals, Dr. Daniel Schiff, Senior Vice President of Thieme Group’s U.S. subsidiary Thieme Publishers, stresses the key role publishers play in distributing high-quality, peer-reviewed academic information.

Academic publishers, Dr. Schiff says, are responsible for coordinating the process of knowledge preparation and distribution. New scientific insights are evaluated and selected through professional review processes, including peer-review, before they are edited, didactically enhanced, and processed for publication in renowned academic journals. In addition, publishers ensure the promotion as well as systematic distribution and archiving of these results in cooperation with academic libraries and multiple other partners. In his editorial published in numerous Thieme journals, Schiff states: “In these activities we help build, protect and conserve the integrity of the corpus of scientific knowledge.”

Dr. Schiff also stresses the importance of marking and defending the line between corroborated facts and unconfirmed claims, saying that “we have and will continue to validate and distribute peer-reviewed data and content, whether consistent or not with assumed truths. In these uncertain times, these are values which always need defending.”

In more than 150 journals, Thieme Publishing Group provides regular updates on the latest research and practical insights.

Thieme Signs Agreement on Sharing Principles for Academic Publications

STM, the global trade association for academic and publishers, has developed sharing principles that serve as a guideline for academic, technical, and medical publishers worldwide. Thieme belongs to the signees of these voluntary principles for sharing scholarly articles in academic networks.

Scientific progress thrives on exchange and sharing. Approaches and solutions, study results and their interpretation, insights and experiences need to be shared, taken up, and evolved. Academic contributions by scientists and researchers, made available by scholarly publishers around the world, play a key role in this. The sharing principles were designed to ensure the smooth flow of information between scientists and researchers while protecting the rights of copyright owners and publishers.

Thieme is committed to the values represented by the sharing principles. It is our goal to make medical information accessible in the best possible way, to disseminate it, and raise the scientific community’s awareness for it. As a publishing corporation, we represent the claims of copyright owners and authors, and protect their contributions against unauthorized use.

For our authors, this means that their contributions made in the context of non-commercial research projects may be made available to involved scientists and researchers as part of a mutual knowledge exchange. Articles may be shared and distributed readily within research groups working on a specific project. Clearly defined standards allow the publisher to determine how often and in which form an article was used and distributed under the sharing principles. This gives Thieme a chance to measure and understand how articles and content are used within the scientific community and to continue to optimize its service. Thieme guarantees to protect the users’ privacy and data security in the processing of usage data. The publisher also supports the dissemination of metadata and open access articles through the relevant academic networks, thus helping to increase the visibility and reach of each academic article.

Thieme Acquires Brazilian Medical Publisher

Rio de Janeiro –Thieme Publicações Ltda, the Brazilian subsidiary of the Thieme Publishing Group, is pleased to announce today the purchase of the Brazilian medical publisher, Livraria e Editora Revinter Ltda.

Revinter, run by Sergio and Laercio Dortas, has more than 40 employees, with offices in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo. Founded in 1974, the company has more than 1,500 active book titles covering a range of medical specialties, and these complement the existing portfolio at Thieme. Over the last 40 years, Revinter has established a reputation for high-quality publishing in key clinical areas for the health professional.

“I’m delighted that Revinter has found an excellent home in Thieme, another family owned and managed company,” said Sergio Dortas. “We look forward to continuing to grow our business.”

The Brazilian subsidiary of Thieme was established in 2013, providing the publishing group with an important base for the growing Latin American market. Thieme Extends Use of Corporate Colors “Blue, Blue, White” to International Products

Effective immediately, Thieme rolls out internationally a single set of corporate colors – “blue, blue, white”. The striking Thieme tricolor replaces the blue-silver branding that formerly distinguished Thieme’s international publications. With products in all languages now in blue-blue-white, the leading medical publisher now has a globally consistent branding.

“We now have a single, world-wide brand, across all products in all media,” says Brian D. Scanlan, President of Thieme Publishers, the international arm of the Thieme Publishing Group. The slogan for the new brand introduction is, “You can’t judge a book by its cover – unless it’s from Thieme.” As Scanlan explains, “the distinctive new blue-blue-white tricolor will continue our decades-long tradition of beautifully illustrated, didactic medical books with the high production values our customers expect.” In the German-speaking markets, the three colors have long become synonymous with supreme quality, reliability, and medical expertise.

All upcoming international titles will feature the new, blue-blue-white design. In early April, the new edition of the top title Atlas of Anatomy by Anne M. Gilroy and Brian R. MacPherson was first introduced with the new blue-blue-white cover at FASEB’s annual meeting in San Diego. It was followed by the presentation of the best-selling Handbook of Neurosurgery by Mark S. Greenberg – also in blue-blue-white – during the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in Chicago in May. The websites and Thieme’s English-language online products including Thieme eNeurosurgery, Thieme MyCourse and the Thieme Teaching Assistant, also now feature the new design.

Extensive marketing initiatives support the introduction of the new blue-blue-white design on the international markets. As of last month, Thieme’s booth design for international conferences and exhibitions also boasts the new branding. In addition, Thieme will hand out information brochures and giveaways during these events. Authors, editors, and business partners have been informed via email. A social media campaign is underway.

Dr. h. c. Albrecht Hauff, CEO of the Thieme Publishing Group welcomes the redesign decision: “I am excited to expand the reach for the strong message that blue-blue-white carries in the German-speaking markets.”

Thieme owes its leading position on the international markets in particular to its English-language publications on neurosurgery, ENT surgery, orthopedic surgery, and radiology. The international division at Thieme releases more than 80 new English-language books each year, plus more than 50 journals, many of them under open access licenses. Thieme maintains offices in ten cities including New York, Delhi, Rio de Janeiro and Stuttgart/Germany. For the Latin American markets, the publishing house is developing a growing portfolio of books and journals in Portuguese. Modern online products for students and clinical practitioners, including the website and the platform Thieme eSpine, complete the range.

This scholarship was created to honor the eight SOMA members who perished in October, 2004 during a flight to Kirksville, Missouri to explore ways of creating a “compassionate campus” at the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. Applicants are judged on how well their character demonstrates the philsophy of osteopathic medicine, unconditional love for their community and peers, and leadership and dedication. Lisa Midboe perfectly exemplifies these qualities, as she has extensive healthcare leadership experience. Lisa’s volunteer activities include serving as Secretary of the WVSOM’s Delta Omega club for women in medicine & hosting a conference at which local leaders spoke to young women in the community about the value of good leaders and how to become an excellent leader. In her second year of medical school, Lisa was a campus contact for the local Habitat for Humanity, creating a volunteer schedule for WVSOM students to assist in building homes and work in the Habitat for Humanity ReStore. She and other volunteers donated an average of 40 hours per month at the ReStore, completing tasks such as painting, setting up shelves, and organizing merchandise. Thieme fully supports these values and passionately strives to encourage excellence in the medical community.

Thieme and Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR) Form Publishing Partnership

Thieme Medical Publishers is proud to announce that they have entered into a publishing agreement with the Society of Interventional Radiology (SIR). Thieme plans to publish several new books annually on emerging topics in the field of interventional radiology, a pioneering, image-guided, minimally invasive medical specialty.

Bill Lamsback, Executive Editor for radiology at Thieme, commented:

“I am very pleased that we have signed on as the Society of Interventional Radiology’s academic book publishing partner, and I look forward to publishing many exciting new titles on interventional radiology with SIR.”

Cheryl Sadowski, Senior Director of Communications, Publications and Marketing at SIR, said:

“Thieme’s expertise in medical publishing along with their global reach are an ideal match for SIR. We are excited to collaborate with them on new quality publications that show how interventional radiology harnesses image-guided therapies to develop breakthrough treatments, change medical practice, and improve the standard of patient care.”

About the Society of Interventional Radiology
The Society of Interventional Radiology is a nonprofit, professional medical society representing more than 5,600 practicing interventional radiology physicians, scientists, and clinical associates, including physician assistants, nurse practitioners, radiologic technologists and paramedical professionals. SIR’s members work in a variety of settings and at different professional levels—from medical students and residents to university faculty and private practice physicians. The society’s core purpose and mission is to work with our members to deliver patient-centered care through image-guided therapy.

Interventional radiologists pioneered minimally invasive treatment, which reaches the source of a medical problem through blood vessels or directly through a tiny incision in the skin to deliver a precise, targeted treatment. Interventional radiology treatments performed by board-certified experts can deliver solutions with less risk, less pain and less recovery time than traditional surgery. These treatments are delivered in collaboration with the patients’ care team. The specialty was founded in the early 1960s. Today interventional radiology is synonymous with modern medicine. As SOMA and Thieme's relationship continues to grow, Thieme and the AOA have made it possible to provide new SOMA members with a text that will facilitate their education. Everyone here at SOMA is very excited about this opportunity, and we look forward to the future." -- Mary Mamut, OMS III, National Membership & Benefits Director for SOMA

"Thieme has the resources to meet osteopathic students’ individual learning styles and increasingly vigorous academic standards. We are excited to be working with SOMA and are fully committed to having a positive impact on the academic experiences of future osteopathic doctors via our broad range of educational products." -- Mike Roseman, Director of Sales for North America at Thieme
